Childbirth Choices Debate
Home Birth Advocate Dies in Childbirth
http://moms.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/01/1
Caroline Lovell, a home birth advocate, died in childbirth on January 24th.
The question at the end of the article asks if this changes your feelings on homebirths. I can't really say because I can't tell from the article if she gave birth at home or at the hospital. I'm thinking this was a hospital birth because of this blurb:
Caroline Lovell, who advocated for midwife funding and legal protection in Australia, died Jan. 24, a day after she was rushed to the hospital during labor, according to the Herald Sun newspaper.
I wonder if her death will have an impact on those who are trying to decide between a hospital birth and a home birth.

That is so sad. I hope it does not hurt her cause. Even the best and most prepared situations can have risks and problems. Her poor family.

There isn't enough information available. It sounds like the baby was born healthy and the mother developed complicaitons. That can happen whether at home or in the hospital. Home births or home birth/hospital transfer deaths receive more press coverage then a planned hospital birth related death. It's how Mainstream Society discourages women from choosing to home birth. On A;pril 2nd, 2003 a woman died from a routine epidural. Did you here OBs gravely saying "Epidurals are dangerous. Women should not undergo them" the way they do when a woman dies from a homebirth? Here's a link to the article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9818616/ns/dateline_nb
