I don't know, my parents spanked me when I disobeyed and I'm not out beating anyone up or committing crimes. My best friend's mom would always talk her to death about something she did wrong and she has a horrible sense of guilt to this day. At least mine just spanked me and that was the end of it and I didn't do the thing again.

Hogwash. The fear of a good spanking used to keep kids in line. No spankings leads to no fear of being disciplined. No fear of discipline leads children to nothing but trouble.

Hogwash.

Discipline does not require physical punishment. Discipline involves respect, not fear.

Hogwash. Discipline doesn't just involve punishment at all. True discipline is laying out expectations and enforcing them through either reward or punishment. For some families that may involve spanking. I'd draw the line at beating a kid, obviously, but a dramatic moment complete with a slight pop on a diaper after moments of dreadful anticipation can be nicely influential for some kids or in circumstances where time outs are ineffective.
