Not Quite Engaged
I proposed to him!
After almost nine years dating, I decided to go ahead and ask my boyfriend to marry me. We are not in the best position, financially and I know he had always thought that he would propose when we could "afford" it. I don't think that getting a ring or a big wedding is that important - I would rather spend money on a marraige than a wedding.
You need to know that there is an old Irish tradition dating back to the 5th century that states that in a leap year, it is appropriate for the woman to propose to the man.
So on New Years Eve, at the stroke of midnight, I told him that I knew that 2012 was going to better for us. As long as we were together, we could get through anything. I told him that I wanted to start the year off by giving him an "I love you" gift. I told him to read the card first because I put a lot of time into picking out the card.
On the card I wrote out how I felt and then on the back page, I put in the following picture...
I wrote in at the bottom: "Will you marry me?".
Needless to say, he was quite surprised and taken aback - but then he looked at me and said "ok" (ever the romantic).
For the "I love you" gift, I got him the blue ray of "Mr & Mrs Smith" (his last name is Smith). He found that hilarious and give me a big kiss!
It was quite nerve wracking - I don't know how men do it (propose). But I'm so glad I did ![]()

Also heard of this tradition- but always thought you only had that one day, 02-29 in a leap year, to make your proposal.. ?
