There are many different ways to get stitches on the needle so you can knit them, and it may seem like there are more methods than there really are because there are so many different names for the same thing.

This quick guide will run through some of the most popular methods for casting on, as well as some of their more popular names.

Wrap Cast On, also known as loop cast on, e-wrap cast on, single cast on

Knit Cast On, also known as knitter cast on, knitting on

Cable Cast On, no known aliases

Long Tail Cast On, also known as double cast on, continental cast on sling shot, two-strand, Y cast on

German Twisted Cast On, also known as twisted German cast on, old Norwegian cast on

I didn't know there were so many! I think I do the long tail cast on. What ever it is, it's the one Mrs. Morton taught me and I've not done any other all these years. I tried doing one called Euro-continental but couldn't do it. Ssssoooo, I stick with what I know - Mrs. Morton's cast-on.

Working with a provisional cast-on

A provisional cast-on is for when you want to go back to the cast-on stitches and knit in the opposite direction: http://www.creativeknittingmagazine.com/newsletters.php?mode=article&article_id=2266&key=KDNL
